‘Game Of Thrones’ Showrunners Explain Arya’s Nymeria Reunion In Season 7 Episode 2

The ‘Game Of Thrones’ showrunners has explained the emotional reunion of Arya Stark and her Direwolf in season 7 episode 2 (Episode spoilers below)

The last time we saw Arya and Nymeria together was in season one, episode two during a fight with Prince Joffrey. Nymeria protects Arya by biting Joffrey’s arm. In fear for her Direwolf, Arya orders Nymeria to escape before Joffrey has her Direwolf killed. Queen Cersei orders for the execution of Nymeria, but when it can’t be found she orders the execution of Sansa’s direwolf, Lady.

In the scene very little occurs. Arya is alone in a forest on her way back to Winterfell following the knowledge that her brother Jon holds Winterfell and not the Bolton’s. She is getting warm by the fire when she hears a pack of wolves move towards her, one of which is Nymeria. The wolf does not attack her, and Arya proposes that it follow her back to Winterfell. When Nymeria turns away, Arya proceeds to say ‘That’s not you’.

Answering questions about the episode after it aired, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were more than happy to further explain this emotional scene that everyone has been waiting for, the reunion between Arya Stark and her Direwolf, Nymeria. Weiss explained that when Arya says ‘That’s not you’, its a reference of what Arya said to her father when he painted this picture for her as a lady of a castle and marrying some lord and wearing some frilly dress. It is symbolic of how Arya has changed over the duration of the show, and she understands why Nymeria does not follow her.

 David Benioff also said:

“Arya’s not domesticated and it makes total sense her wolf wouldn’t be either. Once the wolf walks away, at first she’s heartbroken to have come this close. Then she realises the wolf is doing exactly what she would do if she were that wolf.”
