Snapchat will follow in the footsteps of Netflix by creating its own scripted shows, but just on a much smaller scale. Could this idea catch on it is it just plain stupid?
The company that owns Snapchat, Snap Inc, has teamed up with NBCUniversal in an attempt to create new content in the form of short TV shows you can view through the Snapchat app.
We do not know when an update will be released for the app so we can view these TV shows but we shouldn’t expect it for a while. When it does release, the app will have a new feature called ‘Shows’ and this is where you can view the shows which are said to typically be up to five minutes long.
It was announced that the first original scripted show will be produced with US film and TV producers Mark and Jay Duplass and and their new Donut creative studio. We do not know yet what this will be or even when the show will be released. Speaking with BBC, Mark mentioned his excitement for the project but also spoke of the main challenge of producing a scripted show for Snapchat. Read what he said below:
“We’re super psyched to partner with Snap and NBCUniversal.”
“For us, shooting in that vertical mobile format is a terrifying and thrilling creative challenge.”
This television news coming from Snapchat comes in fast after Facebook announced that they would do something similar. Which one will be more of a success?
Do you think this idea will be a hit or is it another wacky Snapchat invention like the Spectacles?
