The Walking Dead has been renewed for a ninth season by AMC, with the addidion of a new showrunner.
The fact the AMC have renewed its giant The Walking Dead for a ninth season isn’t that huge, considering the scale of the show, the money it generates, and the viewership the drama still gets (despite a pretty huge drop). What is big news, however, is that Scott Gimple will no longer act as showrunner as the role has been handed to former co-executive producer Angela Kang, who was promoted into this position. Gimple has moved from showrunner to Chief Content Officer at AMC.
Angela Kang joined in The Walking Dead writing staff in Season 2 as a Story Editor. She then went on to become co-Executive Producer by Season 5 till season 8. In season 9 she will act as showrunner. No pressure.
“This is an enormously important day for the entire The Walking Dead television universe,” said AMC president Charlie Collier. “We are proud to acknowledge Angela’s significant contribution to the series and to set a clear path forward for a ninth season under her direction.”
Gimple got a ton of stick from fans of the show after his decision to kill of [Spoiler] Carl in the season 8 mid-season finale. This decision actually overseen the creation of a petition by fans to sack Gimple from his position as showrunner, a petition that has since generated well over 50,000 signatures. It seems the fans may have had a voice in AMC’s conclusion to remove Scott Gimple from being showrunner.'The Walking Dead' Renewed For Season 9 With A New Showrunner Click To Tweet
Fans will hope that season 9 will re-invent the show, especially because the drama’s source material [Robert Kirkman’s comics] has some fantastic story-lines that the show still has to come. This includes the Whisperers, who are villains that are unique and could play out great on screen.
Due to patters in the scheduling of TWD, season 9 will most likely release in October 2018.
