The Walking Dead Director: ‘Fans will make peace with Carl’s death’

‘The Walking Dead’ season 8 mid-season finale saw us lose one of the main characters, who has been in it from season one, we’re obviously talking about Carl Grimes. The huge death turned many fans against the show, with a petition even started to sack showrunner Scott Gimple.

The mid-season finale ‘How It’s Gotta Be’ shocked viewers after they saw one of our favorite characters Carl Grimes open his shirt to reveal a Walker bite in one of the final scenes. This bite will controversially see the end for Carl in one of the upcoming episodes, most likely the midseason premiere, which airs in February. One of the main reasons it was so huge and controversial was because in Robert Kirkman’s comics, Carl is still a pivotal character.

Following the hugely controversial finale, a lot has happened behind-the-scenes of the drama. We have seen The Walking Dead strike a season 9 renewal, with a brand new showrunner, with AMC taking bold moves and taking Scott Gimple away from that position and making him Chief Content Officer at AMC.

The new showrunner will be former co-executive producer Angela Kang, who was promoted into this position. Angela Kang joined in The Walking Dead writing staff in Season 2 as a Story Editor. She then went on to become co-Executive Producer by Season 5 till season 8. In season 9 she will act as showrunner. No pressure.

Regarding Carl’s death, director Greg Nicotero recently spoke out about the huge moment, and quite possibly the biggest death in the show’s history. Read what he told  Entertainment Weekly below:

“It’s a beautiful episode and the people that clearly are upset about losing Carl and questioning where the show goes without Carl,”

“I really do believe that a lot of people will put those feelings aside when they watch this episode.”

“They’re really going to get an opportunity to make some peace with it. I mean, that’s what I think. I don’t know, I could be completely wrong.”

I can’t disagree. We will have to see where the show takes us next. I’ll never support killing Carl off, but hopefully it’ll make sense story-wise because we cannot change it now its happened.
