The mid-season finale ‘How It’s Gotta Be’ shocked viewers after they saw one of our favorite characters Carl Grimes open his shirt to reveal a Walker bite in one of the final scenes. This bite will controversially see the end for Carl in one of the upcoming episodes, most likely the midseason premiere, which airs in February. One of the main reasons it was so huge and controversial was because in Robert Kirkman’s comics, Carl is still a pivotal character.

Since the midseason finale aired, many actors and producers linked to the AMC drama have spoken out about the actor Chandler Riggs leaving the show. Rick Grimes actor Andrew Lincoln recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the loss of Carl, and despite saddened by the fact that the character has  been killed off, he took a different take on the death. The English actor explained that Carl is going out as a hero by saving the community, he is also dying with a chance to say goodbye.

“The beautiful thing is it’s what we rarely do in our show – we actually give the opportunity for a goodbye. It was unusual in that regard.”Lincoln explained. “Usually, things happen and people are ripped from you in this world that we inhabit. Thankfully, there was some sense of catharsis on this one, because we got to leave it all out on the screen.”

He continued, talking about how important Carl is to the show.  “He is the linchpin. It goes back to the flash-forward where my mercy prevails over my wrath. There is balancing of the scales in Rick’s life that happens in the back eight episodes. A lot of it is because of what is said in episode nine, by his son.”

Following the hugely controversial finale, a lot has happened behind-the-scenes of the drama. We have seen The Walking Dead strike a season 9 renewal, with a brand new showrunner, with AMC taking bold moves and taking Scott Gimple away from that position and making him Chief Content Officer at AMC.

With a release date set for February 25th, the second half of season 8 looks like it will tackle All-Out-War head-on and have it reach a full conclusion for season 9 which will start afresh with its new showrunner Angela Kang. Season 8 part 2 has been called ‘The Last Stand’
