Amazon are looking to improve on the recent movie adaptation of the popular Stephen King fantasy novels The Dark Tower with a TV series in development.
Amazon have added yet another high-profile fantasy series to their list of adaptations, which includes Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and Robert Jordan & Brandon Sanderson’s Wheel of Time. Now in development is a TV series based on the Stephen King novels The Dark Tower.
The series consists of 8 books and follows Roland Deschain, the last Gunslinger, who is locked in an eternal battle with Walter O’Dim, also known as the Man in Black. The Gunslinger must prevent the Man in Black from toppling the Dark Tower, the key that holds the universe together. With the fate of worlds at stake, two men collide in the ultimate battle between good and evil.
The movie had potential to be a blockbuster. However, as we all know, the majority of moviegoers were not overly impressed by the 2017 movie adaptation which starred Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. Reviewers claimed that the film was confusing, filled with clichés and had poor dialogue. It’s fair to say that it was a flop, and in no way lived up to the expectations of fans who loved the Stephen King novels.
Speaking with IndieWire about the ambitious upcoming TV series, the movie director Nikolaj Arcel said, “It’s being written. I was part of writing the pilot, like the first season ideas and the pilot and the second episode. It’s gonna be awesome. What was exciting about that, whereas with the film, we were really trying to create an introduction and make a standalone film that could sort of live in itself, but what was also exciting, working on the TV show at the same time, is that is totally canon.”The Dark Tower TV Series in Development at Amazon Click To Tweet
Following the unbelievable success of Game Of Thrones at HBO, it seems the fantasy genre from TV has become the most in-demand. Amazon have really went out and got the rights to some of the best fantasy novels out there, including Lord of the Rings which is arguably the greatest fantasy ever written.
Amazon aren’t the only ones that are looking to fill the gap when Thrones sadly leaves us in 2019, with Lionsgate making huge moves and adapting the award-winning Patrick Rothfuss fantasy epic The Kingkiller Chronicle into a TV show and movies, produced by non other than Lin-Manuel Miranda. Netflix have a TV series of The Witcher in development as well.
