Peter Jackson looks likely to be entering the crew for Amazon’s upcoming ambitious high-budget adaptation of Lord of the Rings.
The series will look to fill the gap when HBO fantasy Game of Thrones leaves our screens forever in 2019. The full cost of the show could end up costing Amazon $1 billion. If this is the cost, it will make it the most expensive TV show of all time behind Netflix’s The Crown, The Get Down, Friends & obviously Game Of Thrones. The news has recently emerged that producer of the original Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, Peter Jackson, could be a part of the crew for the TV show. Beginning in 2001, Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy proved to be a global phenomenon grossing over $2.9 billion. The third installment The Return of the King was the most successful and attained 11 Oscars, the joint record alongside Titanic and Ben-Hur.
The Hollywood Reporter stated that, while Jackson’s work was not a part of the original deal giving the rights of Tolkien’s work to Amazon, the producer could still join in after his attorney Peter Nelson recently started negotiations with Amazon over the show.
Amazon not the only network looking to fill the huge fantasy gap when Game of Thrones sadly leaves us in 2019, with Netflix having a TV series of The Witcher in development. Lionsgate are bringing Patrick Rothfuss’ The Kingkiller Chronicle to our screens in the form of a TV series and a movie trilog as well as another adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. It’s certain that in the coming years there will be no shortage of quality fantasy!
